Calverton Parish Council

The Parish Council operate two allotment sites – one off Collyer Road (with a Lee Road extension) and one off Bonner Lane. In total there are over 120 allotments some of which are divided to create smaller, more manageable plots. Plots are of differing sizes and rent is charged per square yard – currently at 15p rounded up to the next whole pound.

 

Tenants who are 65 or older are entitled to a reduction of 50% in the rent of their allotment. Should the tenant rent more than one allotment this concession applies to one allotment only.

 

Tenants are required to pay a deposit of £20 for a full plot (£10 for a half plot) which is refundable if the tenant hands back the plot in good condition.

 

Site gates are secured and tenants can obtain a key on payment of a £10 deposit which is refundable on return.

 

Water from standpipes is available on both sites between April and early October each year.

 

Allotment holders sign up to a tenancy agreement setting out the key conditions of hire. Councillors regularly inspect allotments to ensure tenancy conditions are being met.

 

Waiting List Protocol

 

Allotments are popular and there is a waiting list. The Parish Council have developed a protocol to determine the order in which vacant allotments are offered to prospective tenants.

 

Sheds and Greenhouses

 

Tenants wishing to erect sheds or greenhouses (or any other structure) on their allotments should apply to the Council for permission. Sheds up to 6’ by 4’ and greenhouses up to 6’ by 8’ are generally acceptable.

 

Keeping Chickens

 

The Parish Council have developed a Code of Practice for keeping chickens on allotments. To ensure appropriate levels of animal welfare and minimise nuisance to neighbouring tenants anyone wishing to keep chickens on their allotment is required to complete a risk assessment and obtain Council approval.

 

Bonfires

 

Both allotment sites are situated within residential areas and every effort is made to minimise nuisance to surrounding residents. Consequently, the lighting of fires on allotments is prohibited between April and September inclusive each year. Tenants are also asked to keep fires to a minimum and not to leave them unattended
